Smoothelin是仅存在于平滑肌细胞中的一种细胞骨架蛋白，其与肌动蛋白的相互作用是维持平滑肌收缩功能的核心因素之一。与大部分可表达于未分化完全的增殖性平滑肌的平滑肌标记物不同的是，Smoothelin仅存在于已分化完全的成熟平滑肌中。因此在临床上，Smoothelin可作为平滑肌肿瘤的一种诊断标志物，尤其是其可辅助鉴别高分化的良性疾病与低分化的恶性肿瘤。同时，Smoothelin在膀胱中强表达于固有肌层而不表达或弱表达于黏膜肌层，这有助于对膀胱癌的分期判别。另外，在高血压、动脉粥样硬化等疾病中，平滑肌细胞可能由收缩型转变为合成型，而作为收缩型平滑肌细胞特异性标记的Smoothelin具有良好的研究价值。
