Nestin is a type VI intermediate fiber protein mainly existing in neural stem cells and neural progenitor cells during early development, participating in neural development and tissue repair. Clinical research has found that Nestin is highly expressed in tumor stem cells of gliomas such as astrocytomas and neuroblastoma, which is closely related to tumor aggravation and poor prognosis. This indicates that Nestin has important guiding significance for the diagnosis and prognosis of gliomas. Meanwhile, Nestin is considered as a new vascular endothelial cell marker, which is only expressed in new blood vessels but not in mature blood vessels. Therefore, it is applied to detect the microvessel density (MVD) in tumor tissues, which becomes an effective method for prognosis evaluation of glioma, lung cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and other tumors. In addition, Nestin can label mesenchymal stem cells, so it can be used in combination with CD117 and CD34 to detect gastrointestinal stromal tumor.
