Microchromosome maintenance protein 2 (MCM2), also known as DNA replication permitting factor, can bind with other members of the MCM family to form pre-replication complexes (pre-RC), which will bind to the DNA replication origin and initiate replication. Meanwhile, MCM2 has helicase activity and participates in the formation of DNA replication forks, ensuring the continuity of DNA replication. MCM2 is expressed in actively dividing cells but not in quiescent cells. Therefore, MCM2 is mainly used as a proliferative cell biomarker in clinical practice, which is widely used in the research of liver cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer and other tumors. Moreover, the positive expression rate of MCM2 is positively correlated with the proliferation activity and malignancy of tumor tissues, indicating that the expression results have guiding significance for the prognosis evaluation. In addition, some scholars point out that the medical value of MCM2 is higher than Ki-67 in breast cancer, colorectal cancer, and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
