Mucin 5AC (MUC5AC) is a high molecular weight secreted glycoprotein that mainly exists in epithelial cells and mucous neck cells in gastric tissue. MUC5AC is an important component of gastric mucus, which can protect the gastric epithelium from various physical and chemical factors and participate in the renewal and differentiation of epithelial cells. Some research has found that the expression level of MUC5AC declines in gastric cancer. This may be because of the change in its advanced structure and the decrease in glycosylation degree, affecting its protection function and leading to cellular carcinogenesis. Therefore, MUC5AC can be used as a prognostic indicator for gastric cancer in clinical practice. Meanwhile, MUC5AC is not expressed in normal colon and rectum but can be abnormally expressed in colorectal cancer. In contrast to gastric cancer, the high expression of MUC5AC is associated with poor prognosis of patients, which has potential prognostic value. In addition, MUC5AC is also expressed in secretory cells of respiratory tract, so it can be used for the research of inflammation and tumors of respiratory system.
