Survivin is an apoptosis inhibitor that can directly bind to Caspase-3 and Caspase-7 to inhibit their hydrolysis ability, thereby obstructing the progression of apoptosis program. Under normal conditions, Survivin mainly exists in undeveloped organs of fetuses but rarely exists in adult tissues. However, some research has found that Survivin is abnormally overexpressed in various cancers, such as liver cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. Its expression level is positively correlated with the malignancy of tumors. Researchers pointed out that Survivin not only has apoptosis inhibition effect, but also promote cancer cells to enter the S phase from the G1 phase to accelerate the cell cycle, and synergistically induce tumor angiogenesis with angiogenic factors, which indicates that Survivin is closely related to the occurrence and development of tumors and the poor prognosis of patients. Therefore, Survivin is mainly used in the diagnosis and prognosis evaluation of various malignant diseases, and it has become a new target in tumor therapy.
