Somatostatin

Somatostatin (SST) is a peptide hormone mainly secreted by pancreatic D cells, which plays a negative regulatory role in various life activities such as pituitary hormone secretion, gastrointestinal motility, and renal blood flow. In clinical practice, SST is mainly applied to the functional classification of neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN). After confirming NEN through using CD56, CgA, Syn, and other biomarkers, the positive result of SST indicates that the NEN is somatostatin tumor, which is currently the main diagnostic method for it. In addition, some research has found that SST is expressed in gastric cancer and colorectal cancer, and its positive expression rate is positively correlated with the degree of tumor differentiation. Some scholars indicated that SST may have tumor inhibition effect, which can inhibit cell mitosis and antagonize the tumor promoting effect of gastrin. Therefore, SST provides good reference basis for treatment plan customization and prognosis evaluation.
