Sex determining region Y-box 2 (SOX-2) is a member of the SOX gene family. Its encoded product is one of the essential factors for embryonic development, which can maintain the self-renewal ability and multidirectional differentiation potential of embryonic stem cells. Some research has found that SOX-2 is overexpressed in glioma, lung cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovarian cancer and other malignant diseases, which has good research and diagnosis value. Currently, the mainstream view is that SOX-2 has tumor promoting effect. It may maintain the activity of tumor stem cells, and increase the invasiveness of cancer cells by promoting epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and tumor angiogenesis. However, some scholars pointed out that some patients with high expression of SOX-2 in glioma, gastric cancer, and lung cancer have longer overall survival, which is considered as a good prognostic factor. Therefore, the relationship between SOX-2 and patient prognosis still needs further research.
