Protein gene product 9.5 (PGP9.5) is a specific ubiquitin hydrolase that widely exists in neurons and nerve fibers of the central and peripheral nervous system. It can participate in cell cycle regulation by mediating the ubiquitination modification, which plays an important role in maintaining normal morphology and function of nerve cells. As one of the biomarkers for neuroendocrine cells, PGP9.5 is commonly used in combination with CgA, Syn, CD56 and other antibodies for the research and diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumors. In addition, some scholars found that PGP9.5 has abnormal high expression in lung cancer, gastric cancer, colorectal cancer, breast cancer, cervical cancer and other tumors, which is closely related to the occurrence and development of cancers. This may be because the abnormal expression of PGP9.5 will induce the imbalance in the ubiquitination pathway of cell cycle proteins, thereby promoting the disordered proliferation of undifferentiated cells. Therefore, PGP9.5 can be used as an effective indicator to evaluate the malignancy of tumors, which has important prognostic value.
