Myelin basic protein (MBP) is an alkaline protein synthesized and secreted by oligodendrocytes of central nervous system and Schwann cells of peripheral nervous system. As the main component of myelin sheath, it plays an important role in structure maintaining and signal transduction of neural tissues. In clinical practice, MBP is mainly used for the diagnosis of nervous system tumors such as schwannoma, neurofibroma, and neural sarcoma. Meanwhile, MBP is highly expressed in oligodendroglioma but lowly expressed in glioblastoma multiforme, which makes it useful for assisting in identification. Moreover, some research found that the positive rate of MBP is positively correlated with the pathological grade of glioma, which may be related to its role in promoting cell proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. In addition, some salivary adenoid cystic carcinomas can express MBP, indicating that cancer cells have undergone Schwann cell differentiation, which may be one of the reasons for tumor perineural invasion. Some scholars also believed that MBP+ lung adenocarcinoma cells may promote tumor metastasis by enhancing their affinity for the central nervous system.
