E-Cadherin is an adhesion protein expressed in epithelial cells. It is present in glandular epithelium, as well as in adenocarcinomas of the lung, gastrointestinal tract, and ovary. It can be used to distinguish adenocarcinoma (+) from mesothelioma (−), and breast ductal carcinoma (+) from breast lobular carcinoma (−). It is also positive in some thyroid carcinomas. Decreased or absent expression of E-Cadherin in breast cancer and non-small cell lung cancer is often a marker of poor prognosis. Currently, it is mainly used in the study of invasion and metastasis of various malignant tumors, and serves as one of the important markers for tumor progression and prognosis.
