Special AT-rich sequence binding protein 2 (SATB2) is a DNA binding protein that participates in regulating chromatin transcription and remodeling. SATB2 mainly exists in the mucosal epithelial cells of the lower gastrointestinal tract, and it is a highly specific and sensitive diagnostic marker for primary and metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) in clinical practice. For example, SATB2 can be used in combination with CK7 and CK20 for the differential diagnosis of lung metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma (+) and primary pulmonary enteric adenocarcinoma (-), ovarian metastatic colorectal mucinous adenocarcinoma (+) and primary ovarian mucinous adenocarcinoma (-). Meanwhile, SATB2 has become an important differential indicator due to its specific expression in colorectal neuroendocrine tumor. Moreover, oncological research has found that the low expression of SATB2 may induce microsatellite instability (MSI) and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), indicating that the high expression of it can serve as a potential good prognostic factor. In addition, some scholars pointed out that SATB2 has tumor promoting effect in breast cancer.
